 I had a small rebellious phase around 14-15 where I was very disrespectful to my parents, particularly my mom. I was definitely showing off in front of my friends.

Of course, when they left, I had to pay up. Often this was a trip over her lap to get to know the brush, again.

Well, if I had recognized such behavior (acting up to show off in front of friends) as a pattern in my daughter, she would have ended up over the kitchen table for a date with the cane before (!) her friends left the house. I'm sure that would cool a teenager's rebellious spirit for a while. Nothing brings an oh-so-grown-up teenager back down to earth more reliably than having their schoolmates present during a punishment.
