The thought of four minimal encounters (4 x 3) with the cane every year has me rubbing my bottom and wondering how many cane strokes you have felt growing up in total! I discussed this with my sister on the phone yesterday, and she said that my estimate (every three months) was perhaps a little high. We agreed on three sessions per year and an average of seven strokes per session over the years. I'm pretty sure I won't have received three cane punishments by the age of 10, and by the age of 19 there was definitely only one – the last one from my father. So, very, very roughly estimated, there were about 180 cane strokes in my youth spread over almost ten years. That sounds much more violent than I remember it. You can avoid trouble simply by strictly obeying explicit instructions and otherwise asking yourself before every decision what your dad, or whoever corrects your decisions on your bare bottom with the cane, would expect of you. You don't always answer this question correctly, sometimes even deliberately. But the expectations and standards of your disciplinarian become a very defining element in your life.
