I think their protest is rediculous. A detention should be a punishment. If it's merely a quiet time to do homework, it's only a normal study time and not a punishment. This 30 minutes' quiet is also a really weak punishment anyway. Many meditate or pray for that time without it being considered punishment.

As a parent you can always override their decision. I would say I don't care what you signed, I am overriding you, and you will accept this punishment. I would also make it clear that I would augment any school punishment with corporal discipline when she came home. Given that clarity, she is nuch less likely to need it, and she knows what will happen if she does.

I would talk with her about it and get a better idea of her reasoning behind her decision. I don't see why the school would use In-School-Suspension for this, but maybe that would be better for her in this situation. It might never even come up anyway, as she was well-behaved all year and never had to serve detention, which shows she is responsible.

She deserves to be heard. After listening and talking it over, if I think she is making a bad decision, I'll tell her to take the 30 minutes of detention, which she will do because that's just the kind of daughter she is. :)
