During the school year what you describe is quite a long day. It is good that you have student assistants as helpers during each of the periods. Do you also have to monitor lunchroom conduct? I don't know what came over me as a new JUNIOR at my new private school but I used my fork to flick a piece of cherry pie at another kid in my class. I missed and it hit the wall and slowly dribbled down the wall. The music teacher was the monitor and he saw me do it and immediately assigned me 10 Demerits. Each week we got 7 free but after 7 one had to work off with 30 minutes of detention for each demerit. So, I had to stay after school on Friday for 90 minutes! To drive home the message that you were being punished, you were not allowed to do any homework, rather we had to copy an assigned page of a paperback dictionary, symbol for symbol. When we were done, we had to turn it in and they promptly tossed it into a wastebasket and assigned another page. It was an absolute waste of time and that was their point, I suppose. We have three hour Saturday detention kids whose parents gave permission usually take the swats instead of detention or ISS using a phone in class fort offense is 4 swats or three hour Saturday detention the second offense is 6 swats with the paddle or three days ISS it is a big problem essentially for girls but increasingly for boys . Dad did not allow me to have a smart phone till 14 . I had a regular cell phone . We have had problems with 6th graders who text in class 11 year olds [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

No doubt a few teen and tween calls are important but most of the time, especially during school hours, they are just inquiries as to "What's up?" There are no easy solutions to how to compromise on this issue. Does your school have a policy on acceptable calls, perhaps from parents? Or could a student earn 6 swats from say a parental call? What do you think of a policy of requiring phones to be off during the whole school day and stored in a student's cubby or locker? In terms of focus, this seems to work well. Emergencies can be handled by the Office staff. How does your school schedule paddle swats? As earned and as soon as possible? Or is time set aside after school and students have to wait all day? Is there a late bus, perhaps for the athletes, that kids can take when they have a discipline appointment? [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
