From what I've read in countless places, Domestic Discipline as practiced by adults is typically like what you describe. Primarily, it fulfills a kinky desire for certain physical sensations, for power exchange with a sexual partner and, for many, feelings of vulnerability that are a range of pleasant to very difficult but cathartic emotions. If DD is also effective discipline, and for many reasons it can be, that's icing on the cake.
