The end of 2022 marks the second anniversary of my stewardship of the Female Smoking in Video Games list, and also brings us to the second annual FSVG awards.

With smoking (at least of tobacco) becoming increasingly demonized in the 2020s, one might expect instances of smoking in video games to be on the decline. While this has been the case among some main-stream titles, the decline in smoking in society seems to have ironically increased its value as a literary device. Smoking has become as much a hallmark of the 80s and 90s as video arcades and VHS tapes, as well a device that can be used to make a game or character seem more edgy or risque. Although the decline in IRL sightings is unfortunate, we can hope that this trend in gaming continues.

And now, without further ado, on to the awards.

Runner up:
The Big Con
An excellent example of smoking being used to evoke the culture of the 90s. Smoking is prevalent throughout the game world, there is a side quest involving repeated interactions with a character who is trying to quit smoking, and a bonus dialog can be found at the end where the Player Character discovers that one of her friends has started smoking during the events of the summer.

FSVG 2022 winner:
Perfect Tides
Another example of smoking being used to evoke the 90s. (Actually, the game is set in 2000, but close enough. It was still the 20th century after all...) The game tells the coming-of-age story of a young woman, which includes her and her friends experimenting with smoking and eventually leads to her becoming a social smoker. There is frequent smoking among background and other story characters as well.

And that wraps it up for 2022. Here's to more great entries in 2023!
