Another year of Female Smoking in Video Games deserves another round of awards!
2023 proved to be a disappointing year overall for smoking in video games, especially considering some of the high points of recent years. I feared the year might be a total bust, but it was redeemed by the release of our runner up, as well as by my discovery this year of our winner.
Runner up:
SLUDGE LIFE 2
The original SLUDGE LIFE had pervasive cigarette references, but this sequel takes it to the next level. I suspect it was done as a sort of self-parody of the design choice to include so many references in the first game. Whatever the reason, this game packs in about as many cigarettes as can possibly fit into a game world. The only downside for some may be the extremely-stylized and somewhat-low-quality graphics.
FSVG 2023 winner:
Encased
Although the game was released in 2021, I have set its eligibility for 2023 based on the year it was added to the list. In contrast to our runner up, the graphics in this game are much less stylized, and the smoking is not used for comedic effect; it is simply a pervasive part of the world in which the game is set. The frequency of depictions of smoking, as well as the multiple gameplay interactions involving smoking, elevate this title to the top place in this year's game awards.
And with that, the awards for 2023 are done. I'm sure we are all looking forward to what 2024 will bring!
