What you are struggling with is imagery, and I think all of us students did that. Here is my take on this subject as student.

NG shows you how to point the club in front of you, at chest level, swing the club to the right by letting the right arm fold, and bring it back to center to demonstrate straight line motion. Then, you just keep lowering that idea to the ball. Is that the arc? Yes, but not exactly.

You could, also, put your hand in front of you, palm facing forward, and keeping the palm facing forward and hinged back at the top of the swing, and return it back palm forward. Is that the arc? Yes, but not exactly.

In order to get the imagery, I think it is much easier to get a conventionally sized grip, grip high with the left hand, left shoulder higher than right, and, then, lay on the right hand IN THE FINGERS, overlap Vardon, and the right hand will be well under...it can only go on one way, if the clubhead is several inches behind the ball. Now, swing back, keeping the right elbow down, and look at that right hand, which will be palm up a bit, at the top of the swing. Swing back down to the ball, and because of the position of the right hand (actually, the whole grip) you will not rotate (as in CG) coming into the ball. Notice how the back of the left hand stays facing away from you on the downswing. Now, go back to the NG grip, and ten finger grip and do the same thing.

What's confusing to a lot of people is the plane. I always tell people who are trying to learn NG as Moe swung to try to approximate Moe's look at the swing. I can tell from your question that you are over 5'10 inches tall. Learn to experience the swing the way Moe swung. For example, I am 6'2", and I can experience Moe's swing with a 50 inch driver. Piece of cake to emulate Moe, when you get the driver on Moe's plane. For those of you who don't want to get a 50 inch driver, just fake address the ball on the top of your wheel on your pull cart, or, devise a 7 inch tee on top of a plastic bottle, like a plastic water bottle. Really simple, with the palm grip, isn't it? Now, that you understand the way Moe sees it, you have to apply those principles to your plane.

Also, remember that the swingplane is the plane of the right arm at address. In addition, understand that the swing mechanics are taught in at least three different ways, with this swing, by NGCIs and the LOBG recognizes two different ways...this is dated info, and I haven't seen the new "perfect swing", from NG. Just guessing with the problems that NG is having with the NGCIs I think they will come out with a sanitary version of the swing emulating the lowering of the chest high version of the swing...many in the know,on this board, claim that not to be the case. We'll see.

By the way, the BDW version of the swing is a puller's swing; not an inertia puller, but a pure puller. This idea is usually coupled with taking the club back on plane (Moe took the club back inside to the downswing plane). Nothing wrong with this approach; most NGCIs use it, I believe...no fact to back that up; just observation.

I will never understand the logic of teaching this swing as puller, when they teach the exercise of holding your driver vertically opposite your right shoulder, and, then, swinging the right hand and arm, with a club, underneath it...which, I think, is the primary exercise; the "fundamental" exercise of the swing. However, that is just my opinion. But then, again, I will never understand the logic of taking the club back on plane, if you want to swing like Moe.

Anyway, this was an interesting question, and one that plagues all students. NG, like many swing developers, doesn't listen well to its students, and has never made a tape from the perspective of its students. NG couldn't even provide you with a meaningful list of frequently asked questions, from experienced students. Like most swing developers they can only talk to you from their perspective; not from yours. Of course, you can always click on the "Ask Moe" button and talk to Larry's secretary, when you have real problems.
