Isn't it also possible that the death penalty gives negative enforcement to young people growing up that there is the ultimate price to pay if they end up doing something radical? In other words, when they're young, they're hearing about these criminals being put to death. Again and again they hear it. Then, years later, they find themselves in a situation where they are angry and want to strike someone. If it hadn't been for that early influence, they would have run into their bedroom, reached for a shotgun, and then pulled it out and shot someone. But instead of that, they just hit the person, and don't kill them. All because of that early influence of hearing about people getting the death penalty.
