Subject: bandaid solution
In reply to: 's message, "Is the Death Penalty okay for PNG even though innocent people will be killed?" on 02:24:33 03/06/00 Mon

The death penalty.

My opinion has always been that the death penalty is a "band-aid" solution to a societies problems. I don't think the death penalty deters criminals but rather just gives the impression to the citizens of a country that it deters criminals.

The problem with the death penalty is the time delay between the crime and the punishment. Of course this delay is justified for legal reasons but it also lessons the reality of the penalty.

A person on death row has a chance at appeal, escape or just years of waiting in prison. The punishment does not become absolute until the person is executed. This may be years, if not decades, after the victims of the crimes have been murdered. Much like sex in an AIDS filled world, people are willing to take the risks because the consequences are delayed to such an extent that they seem meaningless in the here and now.

I think a much more effective form of the death penalty is giving potential victims the means to defend themselves even to the point of taking the life of their would be attackers. That is also a death penalty but it is instantaneous. It is also fare and just because it is done in self defense. Imagine if AIDS exploded testicles and killed immediately. How many people would take the risk? The same is true for violent crime.

If our women had the right to carry handguns it would only take a few rascals getting there heads or balls blown off before they would all learn that messing with a woman in PNG means messing with "death row."

The only thing that stops criminals is fear. Fear of what could happen to them now and not what "might" happen to them years and years from now.
