The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey,
National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake
occurred about 65 miles (100 km) southwest of Mount Hagen or 305
miles (490 km) northwest of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea at 3:23
PM MST today, Mar 3, 2000 (Mar 04 at 8:23 AM local time in Papua New
Guinea). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.7 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS
EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may change slightly as
additional data are received from other seismograph stations. No
reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time;
however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location
and size.
