In reply to: 's message, "ENGLISH IS NOT THE ONLY OFFICIAL LANGUAGE" on 11:41:51 02/12/00 Sat

You are correct. I am not Papau New Guinean. I am one of those stupid foulible white westerners who has spent parts of the past thirty years of my life, first as a member of the peace corp in 1965 (probably before you were born), who has worked for litle more than food and lodging to try to help the people of subsistance learn to cope and work in the modern world you more educated people want. We all know we were never appreciated by you, the ones who have gained the most from our efforts, but I can assure you, I have more friends scattered among the villages of PNG than most educated Papua New Guineans will ever have. You are absolutely wrong. Internationally, English is the Official Language of PNG. You may be correct in stating that there are two others within the country, However, the point I was trying to make was this. There are actually hundreds, maybe a thousand different lanuage dialects in PNG and many times people from a village on one side of the mountain can not communicate well enough with those on the otherside of the mountain to ever have a definiative discussion concerning politics or anything thing of national interest. On my last assignment there in 1994 with the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, I had to change interpreters four times in one week as we traveled to different regions. My point in stating that "One language=a United society" stands. I frankly don't care what that single language is or how you spell it. When ever you have people of a nation who speak different languages you demonstrate polarity and not unifaction towards one common cause. You Sir, as an obviously educated Papua New Guinean should reconized this and work towards this unifacation of all the people. Teach them to learn English as a second lanuage by using it in national discussions. And don't be chastizing foreigners for mis spelling or mis pronoucing words of your language. You will have this and unless you are the rare exception you probably scamble the hell out of the English language from time to time yourself. So what? I never complain and don't know any one else who has either. I know you do not know how to communicate on here very well. You don't even know where the caps key is and always type in uppercase.

I suspect you are the one on here who has blasted other remarks and observations I have made in the past and that is ok, you are entitled to your opinions. However, based on the tone of your responses I feel that you are one of the lucky few who have had the opportunity to get this "Westerized" education but instead or appreciating it and using it to better your people you waste a lot of energy bashing anyone who may not be a Papua New Guinean who states an opinion. Stop using the race and nationality card as an excuse for not wanting outside help. I love the people of PNG and that is why I have helped them all my life any way I could. I don't look for any kind of reward with the exception of seeing the people succeed. So stop bashing the hell out of non New Guineans and start appreaciating them. We are not your ememy. Pogo once stated, "We have indentified the enemy and he is us". So stop shooting yourself in the foot and get rid of the hatred.
