Subject: People, people, - DOES THIS SUMMARIZE THE PROCESS???
In reply to: 's message, "What does government and most educated Papua New Guineans think?" on 06:10:52 01/12/00 Wed

Let me try and summarize the process that is being described by most, but not all of you (I have also added a couple things towards the end):

1- Most Papua New Guineans are subsistence affluent.

2- Affluent people tend to be satisfied not working any more to get any more. Thus, PNGeans have the freedom to work less to satisfy their life needs.

3- In that environment, only the more marginalized (does that mean no land and/or no resources???) Papua New Guineans will have to work hard, and will work hard.

4- However Papua New Guineans who are affluent are always willing to take what is offered to them.

5- Because they have most of their life needs already satisfied, Papua New Guineans tend NOT to be willing to work too much for what is offered to them.

6- But in actuality it probably means that most Papua New Guineans in the village, in the absence of outside propaganda, would probably be relatively satisfied with their life as it is. That's why they aren't that motivated to get more.

7- Unfortunately, this also means that they are unlikely to maintain the services they are given by church or government. They want a lot without having to give much work in return.

8- Unfortunately, this also means that they can easily be ripped off by foreigners, such as foreigners offering them handouts, in return for resources.

9- Unfortunately, this means that in taking the handouts, some Papua New Guineans may lose the basis for their affluence, as their land becomes scarred or their resources depleted.

10- When this happens, the result will be to create a situation where PNGeans become more marginalized than they were before. This alone will force them to work harder for less.

11- Marginalizing PNGeans will pressure them to develop the motivation to compete with and win against their neighbors who are already in the same situation. Including, not not restricted to Asian competitors.

Does all this summarize the trains of thought others have been putting down in this discussion topic?

Any additions or corrections?

Any suggestions on where the process should be diverted?

Keep going, I'm listening.
