You still don’t get it do you? No one is promoting one-day wonders. No one is talking about miracles. What we are talking about are the contrasts between slavery for ‘masters’ in the urban areas and subsistence affluence of villagers.

There is no one stopping you or anyone from working full time in your cocoa plot. Go right ahead a do it and see how much more yield you can squeeze out of you fruit crop. As many small holder farmers know, there so much grass to trim, so much rubbish to clear and so many crumbling houses to repair, so much oil palm to pick and so much cocoa fruit to pick.

There is no point in working more than what is required to accomplish certain outcomes. Doing so is a waste of effort and therefore energy. And for those with cash crops already bearing fruit, there is little to be gained by working more than what is need to ensure that the crops remain healthy in order to provide a steady income (fortnight harvests = fortnight pays). This usually involves a full two days of work every three to four weeks, with two to three days work every fortnight for harvest, and hence forth-nightly income, with the remaining time devoted to other matters that are important to village life.

The same can be said for working in the kaukau garden. Little is to be gained by slaving away, 8 hrs a day, growing and producing crops that will only rot away in waste. I am talking about balancing need with the amount of effort expended to meed those needs. Those in the urban centres must work 8 hrs a day in order to meed their needs. Not so for those enjoying subsistence affluence, who get better paybacks for 3 hrs spent gardening a day than 8 hrs hours spent working for someone else. There is no need to plant more food than one can consume or give to family (if there is surplus), unless one has ways to preserve the excess produce or one has unlimited land to till 8hrs/day five days a week.

Contrary to what you may perceive, villagers, at least from where I come from, don’t live a hand-to-mouth existence. They are far better fed than most of the urban dwellers that must slave away 8hrs a day to afford that pack of Trukai and can of Besta or the kilo of lamb flaps from the supermarket. Even with their relaxed lifestyle their combined cash crop exports help improve PNG’s trade deficit, so its not as if they are contributing nothing to the economy. These are the people that actually create wealth by improving your country’s cash flow situation, and they do it by consuming less but enjoying more.
