Subject: Tony Gaffney

Did Gaffney verbal to BU recently? He's attending Northfield Mt Hermon, correct? NMH should be a strong program next year.

Yes he did. Good skills. He's a 6'6 wing. Very similar to BU signees Etienne Brower and Doug McClaughlin Williams. I don't know where he'll play? He is very, very skinny and those two are better!

He's a better passer than Brower with a good court sense. Remains to be seen who shoots it more consistently. Brower is likely better off the dribble and is stronger, with a little bit better of a basketball body. Both guys are pretty capable defensive players. I've never seen McLaughlin-Williams play, so couldn't give my thoughts on him. Brower is a quality get for BU, in my opinion; he should develop into a nice player in the America East. I like Gaffney's skills, as well. He'll definitely have to get stronger, though.

Tony Gaffney is an interesting player but you have to see him a few times to get the message. At 6'7" he needs to get stronger, but, regardless of competition, one game he'll score 14 with 12 boards 9 blocks and 7 assists, then the next he'll score 34 with 6 3's. He's such a skilled team offensive player and the best team defensive player out of this region in a long time. Fascinating, and if he works hard with those tools, he could make a lot of fans.

I didn't realize he was such a skilled defensive player, but I was very intrigued by his package of offensive skills. Seldom do you see players with his size who are so comfortable on the perimeter, passing the ball, and see the floor well. I mean, many players call themselves "swingmen" or claim to have some kind of guard skills, but he's a kid whose perimeter game seems pretty legit.

Gaffney is a good sized 3 man as far as height is concerened. He is very, very weak physically. He does have good skills. However, it is important to realize that the only offers he had on the table were from DII Northeast Conference schools like Stonehill and Bentley.

Very good point but not quite true. From his coach, Tony Gaffney had late full offers from UNH, Maine, Lehigh and Lafayette and mounting interest from Rider, Albany, URI, Central Connecticut, Holy Cross, Ivy's and later inquiries from the Big East and others for next year. The D-II's (St. A's, Bentley, Stonehill and Assumption)hoped he'd slip through the cracks because he plays the whole game but some big performances before his high school season got scouting bureus attention, then he averaged a triple double (23, 12, 11 blocks and 7 assists) in leading Somerset out of nowhere to the South title. At 6'7", 185 he has to get stronger (Northfield Mount Hermon) whether at the 3/4 or the 2/3 but Coach Woolf staying, the A-10 probability and the quality school got him to verbally commit. Plus he's a good kid and he makes the big shot. NMH is virtually free and he can become a better student if he wants to study engineering, a tough major.
P.S.You want to see his little brother at point guard. Wow.

Is this kid going to prep school next year? Wolf is stashing kids away at prep schools so they can go to Boston College or UMass. Gerry Cocoran is not going to go to Boston University. He'll end up at an A10 level school or higher.

Corcoran will go higher. Great stroke with good size. If Gaffney had so many offers and interest he would not be going to prep school! Very few kid's have a dream of playing for BU. Plus he's not better than Brower or McClaughlin-Williams who are both solid but not spectacular wings.

The point of prep school is to help exploit a kid's college experience. Therefore he very well could have had offers from and interest in all those schools. Maybe he felt as though a year to develop not only his strength but also his studying skills could be beneficial for maximizing his college experience, both as a student and a basketball player??

I caught a little of the BABC tournament yesterday and Corcoran didn't impress me. Of course, it was my first time seeing him play but he seems one-dimensional to me. Didn't show much athleticism or ability to put the ball to the floor. Mainly a spot-up shooter. Thought that Colin McIntosh was the most solid player on the BABC squad.

Gaffney played for the RI Hawks and was much more impressive. Real nice overall game and always in control.
