Subject: And the new UVM Women's Hoops Coach is...

Sharon Dawley, who has been Dartmouth's Associate Head Coach for the past six seasons. She had been on the Dartmouth staff for the past 10 years, and prior to that was the head coach at Tufts (D3, NESCAC school for the uninitiated) for 9 seasons. I have it on *fairly* good authority that she was selected over BC Asst. Kelly Cole, and Binghamton Asst. Rich Conover.

I'm still assessing this hire. There's something that doesn't sit right with me, and I'll try to explain. There's something about hiring as Assistant Coach from a program that is not as good as yours to be your *Head* Coach. I mean, she was the Associate Head Coach at Dartmouth. We all know that being Associate Head Coach comes with a great deal of responsibility and influence as to how the program takes shape. Dartmouth was barely above .500 this past year, and sub-.500 the two previous seasons. An average Ivy League team. This after back-to-back NCAA appearances. While she certainly had a hand in those tourney bids, one would also think she is partially responsible for the recent spell of mediocrity. Am I wrong on this?

Now, she does have head coaching experience, and was fairly successful at that level. This isn't based on anything, but I could speculate where that may have hurt someone like Cole (no prior head coaching experience). And Dawley has been in the game for a while, so I believe that she knows what she's doing. And of course, I'm just a schlub on the Internet, and not one of the people who interviewed her and made this selection. I certainly don't want to run her down, considering she's had the job 12 hours and it's very possible she'll do an amazing job. Still, I can't shake that little nagging feeling about this, until someone gives me a reason to do otherwise. But all that aside...go get 'em, Sharon. You've got a great opportunity. Make the Catamount Nation proud.

Good Luck to Coach Dawley and Vermont Women's Hoops. Her total of 19 years at her last two schools is impressive and means she's not a wanderer (That of course can be viewed two ways). Hopefully she will do a great job for the Catamounts.

I know Sharon and think she is a great person. She had a great college career I believe at St. Anselm's and is from the greater Boston area. Why did UVM not hire Chris Wielgus her boss instead of her? I was hoping Vermont would go after a big name head coach or assistant or possibly a coach with Vermont roots say like USM's Gary Eifield or Noreen Porsek (I think that's her last name, Brennan's sister down at Middlebury who has years of head coaching experience at a find academic institution and played for Virginia Tech.) I hope Sharon does an a terrific job. One other thought is maybe, the new ad and president want to shift the attention from women's hoops back over to men's hoops for the first time in the history of UVM. Men's basketball generates alot more money and national exposure, especially with Tom Brennan as the coach. Men's basketball is on the rise at UVM. Women's basketball losing Morgan Hall and Dawn Cressman could be in a rebuilding stage. I am sure Tom Brennan and company are chalking this up as a win for them in terms of not having to compete with a big name women's coach for noterity.

Re: Vermont roots-- the cupboard is bare with qualified candidates that have spent time in the state. Fifield has absolutely zero NCAA D-I experience and Brennan's sister has little. I understand the four that they interviewed all have been with D-I programs awhile.
For the same reason, I also guarantee that Beaney or McShane will not be finalists for the hockey job. People in Vermont need to quit looking for the 'best candidate with some sort of local connection' and look for the best candidate. That's why UVM has a quality AD coming in, too.

Re: Tom Brennan and staff chalking it up as a win in terms of not having to compete ...-- What an idiotic statement. At Vermont, they get along. This isn't UConn, Hartford, Maine or even B.U. where the two programs kill each other over petty issues (keeping score). How Cieplicki got along with Brennan was a big reason why Boeheim strongly endorsed him, too. Basketball is basketball and they help each other. Example-- this is why David Hehn and Tiffany Spinka are at UVM.
