Subject: ...and the winner is...Boston Univ
The answer to the hotly contested issue of the conference tournament is....Boston University.
here is the release off the AE website....
Boston University will play host to the 2004 Choice Hotels International America East Men's Basketball Championship at the 3,806-seat Walter Brown Arena on campus. The decision was reached by a vote of the conference's athletics directors at a meeting at the Beatrice Fox Auerbach Computer & Administration Center on the University of Hartford campus today.
Boston University and Northeastern University had served as co-hosts of the championship the past two seasons, including last year when the Terriers’ hosted at Walter Brown Arena.
The 10-team championship begins with first-round games on Friday, March 5. Quarterfinal and semifinal games follow on Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7, respectively. The championship game will be played Saturday, March 13 at the home court of the higher remaining seed and will be televised by ESPN.
"We are excited that the Choice Hotels International America East Men’s Basketball Championship will return to Boston, one of the nation’s great sports markets," said Chris Monasch, Commissioner of America East. "Walter Brown Arena, and the central location of the campus relative to the other America East member institutions, give our fans a tremendous opportunity to enjoy three great days of college basketball."
“We are happy Boston University was chosen to host the championship again this season,” said Gary Stickler, Director of Athletics at Boston University. “Our staff takes great pride in being able to offer another first-class event for the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and fans of America East.”
Choice Hotels International will be the sole title sponsor for the America East Men's Basketball Championship for the second-straight year. Choice brands will be promoted exclusively to America East directors of athletics and coaches, who generate approximately 14,000 room nights annually. In addition, Choice Hotels will also receive television exposure, championship public address announcements, and championship event signage throughout the 2003-04 season as part of the America East Conference package, as well as radio exposure, signage, on-court corporate representation, and in-game promotions during the men's basketball championship. Game program and ticket advertising, the inclusion of Choice Hotels in the championship logo, and exposure via the conference's web site--americaeast.com-- is also included.
The America East Championship has utilized the present format of a single site for the first rounds, with the championship game played at the higher remaining seed since 1996. Northeastern and Boston University served as co-hosts the past two seasons with the championship played at the Huskies’ Matthews Arena in 2002 and the Terriers’ Walter Brown Arena in 2003. The University of Delaware hosted the first, quarterfinal and semifinals rounds from 1996 to 2001.
America East will consist of 10 teams for the 2003-04 season: University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; University of New Hampshire, Northeastern, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont.
Game times and ticket information for the 2004 Choice Hotels International America East Men’s Basketball Championship will be announced at a later date.

Re: ...and the winner is...Boston Univ -- Patch, 16:11:37 05/07/03 Wed
Will one or more of our BU posters please relay the message that the host school did a terrible job this year. The facilities were filthy and no one working was really working, they were hanging out.
The location is fine I just don't know if going "BIGTIME" BU knows how to host it.

the tangential winner is.... NU -- NU Hoop Fan, 17:13:29 05/07/03 Wed
NU is the tangential winner of this thing, if you really think about it. It gets to play the tournament effectively at home, with zero travel time, and has NO financial risk.
With the teams that NU and BU have next year, the Huskies and of course, Terriers, could make it to the finals without having to hop on a bus.
I never thought I'd say this but... "Thanks BU."

In coming up with the money to host next season's AE men's basketball tourney, I think BU has demonstrated that it's serious about its recently stated commitment to increase its support for the basketball program.

From what I heard, of the four bids that were received, Boston's bid had the LOWEST financial package guarantee, by far. So much for finances being the objective criteria...

I didn't think BU did that bad a job hosting it last year, I kind of enjoyed it. The only bad thing is the stale beer smell in WBA.
I am glad Binghamton wasn't able to buy the championship.

Crow tastes great when served with New England Clam Chowder and Parker House Rolls. I'll be glad to eat it, as will Dane96, and the rest of us who are Bostonians. Hey we were wrong, but I'm not complaining now.
I was told it was Binghamton's to lose. I called O'Brien this afternoon to see what happened. Only thing I can think of is that BU outbid (or was close)BU, and if the funds were close the league went local.
I did hear from a client of mine tonight that BU has approached several local businesses about providing funds to BU for costs of the tourney (they were a sponsor of the tourney in 2002, and I think in 2003 provided support). They were told they can't be a "Sponsor" per se, but they can get some perks.
I'll let you know what O'Brien says.
Hey, I'm as shocked as anyone.

Re: Interesting -- lsbal, 17:31:40 05/07/03 Wed
Though I am a little bumbed in that I thought Hartford put together quite a good package(especially financially) I actually think our AE leaders might be showing some foresight that we have lacked for years. Mind you I don't think the tourney was run very well this past year but just having the event from Friday to Sunday this year seems to make many of my other complaints more negligable.
The higher ups are very concerned about BU jumping to the A-10. Letting them secure the tourney really puts them in the catbird seat in terms of representing the AE in the NCAA(though no one must have told UVM last year). Maybe if we had guaranteed Hofstra the tourney for a few years this might have quenched Hofstra's thirst for success and we possibly might never had lost them(albeit to a higher level eventually...A-10).
I wouldn't be suprised if the vote went like this.
BU votes BU
NU votes BU..home game..no cost..no travel..fan support
Maine votes BU..Hartford,BingU too far for fans..UVM too tough at home
UNH votes BU..see Maine
Albany votes BU..not really sure where they would vote..just thinking BU by going with majority so just like in politics they are owed something later.
BingU votes BingU
Hartford votes Hartford
Stonybrook votes Harford..closer for fans..might go with majority though as like Albany could always say remember when..
UVM votes UVM
UMBC votes BU..when your new definately go with the majority.

Dane96 is a tool -- BingoBooster, 18:42:40 05/07/03 Wed
Now that the actual voting has taken place, I'd like to remind all posters of Dane96's comments many weeks ago... Remember, Dane96 was the one who emphatically said Binghamton had already paid off Monasch and that the tournament was coming to Binghamton - done deal. Those will also recall that I was quick to blast Dane96 at the time, explaining to him that it was an AD vote, and that nothing was done until May 7. He refused to acknowledge that Monasch doesn't make the decision, and blasted the Commish for prostitution (I believe that was the word used). After waiting patiently for this day, I can now say...
I need to hear from Dane96 right now. I need to read his words to the tune of...
"I'm sorry for my inaccurate and foolish statements"
"I had no knowledge base for that subject and numerous more subjects that I pretend to know about"
"I am, quite frankly, an idiot."
I find it so amusing that, in addition to Dane96, NUBoy and others were so quick to hammer the AE brass for handing the tournament over to the greedy new member who doesn't have the booming city, is too far away from the HUGE AE fan base of Boston (ha ha)and hasn't paid its dues, yet when the final votes are counted, Boston is the pick. Yes, that same school who has been BLASTED repeatedly on this board for its lack of interest in putting on a first-rate BASKETBALL tournament.
Eat crow Dane96 and NUBoy - and lots of it. You have successfully made fools of yourselves. Enjoy the big city atmosphere, your family vacation, and your "old school" host site. Let's see you nail Monasch for this one...

Re: ...and the winner is...Boston Univ -- Van Lier, 09:32:01 05/08/03 Thu
I have no problem with BU hosting the tourney. But, based on last year's experience will be purchasing earplugs for next year. Everyone likes noise at sporting events, but WBA is excruciatingly tinny. The accoustics in that building are horrible. I've never been to a hockey game at WBA but it must be rock-concert like.
Hey, arena is dirty, smelly. Concessions are awful. Restrooms are small and unsanitary. Staff couldn't care less about patrons. Can't understand anything from PA system.
On the plus side: Good basketball. The return of the Friday night play-in games. Lots of good restaurants/hotels. Ninety miles from the crib.
All in all ... happy with the Boston selection. Now, if we can just hang some sound baffles from the ceiling of WBA.

As one who agrees (and posted same) about the conditions in Brown Arena and treatment of the patrons, I strongly urge everyone who has complaints to contact Monasch and the BU athletic administration and let them know how you feel. If enough people complain, we might get better conditions and treatment at next year's tourney.
