Subject: Interesting report regarding new Bing signee Darel Lucas

This report is straight from the athletics website:

Binghamton University men’s basketball coach Al Walker has announced the signing of junior college guard Darel (pronounced Da-RAIL) Lucas (Wichita, Kan./Redlands CC) to a national letter of intent. Lucas, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, played two seasons for Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma. He will inherit the role vacated by graduated all-star Anthony Green, and will have two seasons of eligibility at Binghamton.

“Darel Lucas is a terrifically talented point guard,” Walker said. “He is skilled, athletic and tough-minded. We are tremendously excited to have Darel join our basketball family.”

Lucas, who averaged 8.2 points and 5.1 assists this year for the 32-3 Cougars, selected Binghamton after visiting NCAA “Sweet 16” participant Butler. He shot 48% from the field, 37% from three-point range, and was a 73% free throw shooter. The Cougars were ranked as high as No. 3 in the country in the NJCAA Division I poll.

“Darel was the best on-ball defender I’ve had in many years,” RCC head coach Steve Eck said. “He could lock up the other point guard like no other in junior college. Coach Walker is getting a very good ball player.”

Lucas was ranked the ninth best junior college sophomore point guard by The Sporting News prior to the 2002-03 season. As a freshman starter, he averaged 7.5 points and 3.2 assists for a Cougars team that went 30-5 and captured the NJCAA Division II championship. He shot a sizzling 62% from the field.

In high school, Lucas was an all-state player for Southeast High who led his team to the Class 6A state championship game as a senior. He earned four letters and was a second-team All-City selection in 2000-01. He averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.6 steals in his career. Lucas also excelled in track, where he was the state-runner-up in the 400 (48.78) as a senior.

Lucas joins freshman guard Troy Bailey and junior forwards Alex Adediran and Robert Todd as newcomers for the 2003-04 season. Bailey and Todd were red-shirts last season. Walker, who loses three starters and four letterwinners from a 14-13 team, still has two more scholarships to give.
