So much for 30 win seasons. Tomorrow afternoon, someone's season comes to a VERY disappointing end.

[> [> [> [> Report from the Tourney -- Go Cats Go, 03:04:27 05/23/03 Fri

Went to the UVM/NU game tonight. As far as the game goes...it just wasn't UVM's night offensively. Kyle Brault hit a homer in the 2nd inning, and that was pretty much it. UVM may have had two guys get to 3rd base the rest of the night, but I believe they both came about when the 9-hitter was coming up, and so it ends. Merchant was solid for 7, but poor infield play led to NU's 2 runs, and that was all they needed. Most disappointing: Bottom 9th, 2 down, Tewksbary on first, full count...and Jeff Barry watches strike 3 go past him. Chalk up a backwards K in the biggest at-bat of the night. Get the bat off your shoulder!!!

As for the off-the-field aspects, GREAT crowd tonight. Announced attendance was a little over 1100. I'd imagine that's total tickets sold for both games, and I'm not sure what the Maine/SBU crowd looked like, but it appeared all 1100 were there for the nightcap. Centennial looked as good as an 80-year-old ballpark can look (i.e. at least there weren't any missing panels in the outfield fence, like I've seen in the past). The field itself looked real rough in the outfield. Hope they get that cleared up for the Expos opener. Overall, it was still a far cry from what the place will look like in mid-July, but it was certainly 100x the best effort I've ever seen for a UVM baseball event.

Won't be able to make it tomorrow (although, possible storms may be blowing in...let's see if it happens). And you're right on, Jeff: one team is going to be painfully disappointed tomorrow at about 3 PM. I couldn't help but notice the exact similarity to last year's tournament, with the same match-ups and the same results. For UVM's sake, history better correct itself tomorrow.

Vermont's dream season turns into a season ending nightmare. R.I.P. Cats..........

[> [> [> [> [> [> Colossal Disappointment -- Go Cats Go, 16:25:25 05/23/03 Fri

You hit it right on the head: dream season with a nightmare finish. That's baseball: the bats go cold for two games, and you're screwed no matter who you are. In hindsight, if I'm Currier, I start Dixon today over Miller...but one run won't beat Maine, and two runs in two days will get you exactly what the Cats have: 0-2 and a 4th place finish.

But, with that being said, it's still a time to look at the whole product, and thank the 4 seniors (Barry, Dixon, Merchant, and Robinson) for their efforts. I'm not a historian, but I wonder when the last time UVM had 3 Vermonters like Barry, Dixon, and Merchant in the same class that accomplished so much. Too bad a NCAA bid wasn't one of those things.

As for next year, the plus side is that they return 8 of their 9 field starters (Barry in CF being the only loss). Tewksbary, Chamberland, and Brault still make up a formidable line-up. Hopefully Jason Carey can hit a little more like his freshman year than his sophomore year. Jay Iannoni will be a key contributor. The bad news however will be the pitching staff: Only Derek Miller returns from their weekend starters. Justin Bissonette and Jared Slater both have weekend potential, but that still leaves a 4th starter and a bullpen to worry about. They'd better hope for some impact freshman arms to come in and contribute right away. Either way, whereas this team relied on the pitchers, next year's team will go only as far as the bats will take them.

I absolutely agree with you about Dixon. Not starting him may have been the worst coaching move Currier has made all year....unfortunately, it may have cost them bigtime. I questioned Maine's coach for not starting Collar last night vs. Stony Brook as MacDonald was only the #3 starter this season.

I would like to see Vermont continue to do well. America East is looking like a very solid baseball conference right now, especially considering our geography. Vermont might take a dip next season in the win column, but their offense should be nasty.

Was at the Vermont/Mane game today...what a huge dissappointment. Vermont bats went dead..just like last year. Some very questionable coaching decisions regarding pitching...Dixon should had been the starter today. Also starters coming in as relievers...all very strange.

As for next season, Vermont should be solid again. They will have 3 quality starters returning...2 of them hard throwing lefties. The combined record of these 3 was 12-7...not too shabby at all. Their offense returns all with the exception of Barry..who had a very average season at best. Next years concerns will mainly be with the bullpen..

[> [> [> [> [> Northeastern 5 Stony Brook 4 -- mainejeff, 18:27:08 05/23/03 Fri

Stony Brook scores 3 runs in the top of the 9th and Northeastern scores 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th for the win. What a game!!! It's hard to believe that Northeastern's young team is performing the way they are....amazing. This year's tourney is following a eerily familiar pattern to last year's tourney with all the same teams winning the same match-ups so far.....

Let's hope NU doesn't repeat last year's performance and drop 2 on the last day to go home disappointed.

I was talking to some people this week at NU and they indicated that McPhee was pleasantly surprised the way the youngsters are reacting this late in the season.

Personally, I'd be shocked if they won the thing, especially with the way they play defense, but I wouldn't complain.

Well, the Huskies won't have to worry about the Black Bears on Saturday. A disappointing end to a successful regular season. I'm hoping that Maine beefs up its non-conference schedule in the future so that a 38-18 record gets at least SOME consideration for an NCAA at-large berth. It definitely won't this year.

If you YAWN at AE Basketball what the H... are you doing following Maine Baseball. They beat all the weak sisters to beef up their record and then they bow out of the AE tourney unceremoniously, joining powerhouse Vermont on the sidelines. A real power sport - YAWN.

I'm more into sports that have a chance to compete in the NCAA Tourney.....not the weak sisters of the poor like AE mens hoop......sorry.

What makes you think Maine and Vermont have a better chance to compete in the NCAA when the 1st and 2nd place teams in the conference can't even win the conference tournament. It's a joke!!

You have no substance to support your conversation. I'm sorry your statements seem ludicrous.

Baseball is great but it still not a big deal in the big picture.

.....tell me when you think one of them could be a bench player at a real hoops school. If you knew baseball, you would know that it is a hell of a lot easier to upset a team in baseball than in hoops. Sorry, but AE mens hoop is a joke....half the teams can't even average 1000 fans a game......what a joke!

Your opinion and knowledge is greatly appreciated, but your team represented the conference by getting into some bar fights and choking in the AE Tourney. Yes, it's easier to get upset in baseball that's why they play the format that they do.
Baseball is good but why do only a handful of people post about baseball meanwhile basketball is posted year round??

THINK about it!!!!

Maine players were in bar fights? Says who? This rumor was started by a bitter Vermont fan who's team choked more than Maine and eliminated the Cats after they scored only 2 runs in 18 innings at their own ballpark. I love the way anyone can post stupid rumors and out and out lies......sound familiar?

I am going to check this rumor out on the bar fight in Burlington on Friday nite. I am from the area...and I also heard from reliable sources that some Maine Baseball players were in a fight. I will post the true details as soon as I find out.

Couldn't have been UMaine baseball players. But if they played any role, they ought to fire the staff, blow up the program and start all over again. If it's true ... what a disgrace and a black mark on the whole university.

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> SBU 11 NU 10 in Game 1 - NU up 10-0 in Game 2 -- NU Hoop Fan, 14:53:39 05/24/03 Sat

NU blew a 7-1 lead, committing 6 errors in losing game 1 to SBU this morning 11-10.

In game 2, NU is up 10-0 in the bottom of the 4th.

If NU blows this one, I'm going to go nuts. 2 years in a row losing 2 games in the last day to miss the NCAA's. This one will hurt more, blowing 7-1 and 10-0 leads.
