Subject: Vermont Ad finalists

Today's Burlington Free Press, Friday May 2, 2003, reports that Vermont has it down to two candidates for the Athletic Director's position vacant come July 1, 2003. The AD from UMinnesota-Duluth and the Ad from Eastern Michigan University are the finalists. Sorry, but I forget the names of these two. Both have a plethora of experience in higher education and athletic administration. Go Cats Go, any word on who the favorite is? I think the guy from UMinnesota-Duluth may be the leader because of his success in building both his men's and women's hockey programs to national prominence. Considering Vermont is a hockey school it makes sense they would hire an Athletic Director with a hockey background. From a basketball standpoint, I don't want the guy from Eastern Michigan because the manner which his hoops program has fallen into the toilet. Keeping in mind, that EMU in 1996 beat Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This AD fired Milton Barnes who was a good coach and was keeping EMU a perennial in the highly competitive Mid American Conference. Either guy I guess is a upgrade for Vermont athletics. I am surprised that UVM did not hire from within and promote either Jeff Schulman or Sue Marsland. Obviously, Vermont under the auspicious vision of Dan Fogel is making a legitimate commitment to athletics. Also, I am a little disappointed considering the importance of diversity that a minority or a woman is not a serious candidate? Any word on the candidates to fill the vacant women's basketball job? Here are some possibilities:
Gary Eifield, native Vermonter who has build a national power at DIII Southern Maine. Gary is former Cathy Ingelse assistant at Boston College. Doris Burke, a brillant analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports. She was the former had Head Coach at Providence College. Former UMass Head Coach Joanie O'Brien, led UMass to the 1998 NCAA tournament and Atlantic 10 championship. Noreen Poscek, Head Coach at Middlebury College, sister of Tom Brennan. His led Middlebury to numerous NCAA tournaments. Go Cats Go, do you have some other possibilities? Considering Vermont hired Pam Borton all these names are good options. Also, the two AD finalists were in the Final four for Maine AD's spot.

Oh god. Tom Brennan's sister in the league!!!? What a hoot that would be.

That's right, I had forgotten that the Eastern Michigan guy was also in the running. Just an FYI.....he withdrew his name before Maine made its final decision.

Very interesting isn't it? Both schools, Maine & Vermont used the same search firm for the AD position. The deal is this, this search firm signs up these AD candidates as clients in a sense. If the AD gets the job they give about a third of their first years salary to the firm, like and agent in a way.

Anyway the firm lines up four or so other candidates that are not as good and fixes the search for the candidate that they are representing unbekonwn to the school looking for an AD. Sometimes they will sign up more than one if they are running a couple of searches. Any coincidence that Stony Brook is using the same firm as Maine and Vermont? Let's see who is in that pool.
