Have a look at this thread: http://www.voy.com/202532/2255.html Reading the old newspapers I suddenly noticed the series of articles describing the fatal accident investigation that happened some 80 years ago in 1933 at the orphanage in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The chiefs of the orphanage were facing the charges of cruelty and mistreatment to their wards. Among the numerous cases of child abuse including spanking and forcible feeding their was a description of practice used by orphanage when some girls helped matrons to bathe boys up to 12 year old. There are a number of testimonies when some of the girls who were assigned to do such work were even younger than some of the boys they used to bathe! For example, Miss Bertine Mero, the former assistant matron of the Shelter, testified, that: "...four girls ranging from 9 to 15 years helped her and Miss Magdalene Strang to bathe the boys." "A little girl whom Miss Strang called "Little Mother", another girl of 12 and one 15 were drafted to wash the boys." "She said there was one boy named Harry, 17, who also was washed in this fashion" (!!!) (Maybe as a punishment for the lack of personal hygiene? - PS) "The boys, she said, would line up naked in the hall. Girls passed along the hall while the boys were awaiting their scrub. The boys were called into the bathroom four at a time, she said. Younger boys were bathed in the tubs in pairs." "- Did the boys dry themselves afterwards?" asked the Deputy Minister." "- No, usually they were told to stand on a seat and the girls rubbed them dry." Another whitness, Mrs Dick, "previously named as one of the girls assigned to bathe older boys in the tub, said she was not called on to do this, but named two other girls of 15, whom she said she had seen soaping, scrubbing and drying off the boys." "She said she frequently saw the boys, stripped of clothing, standing on a seat in the bathroom waiting the girls to rub them with towels." Yet another witness, David Cosgrove "said that he was the one of the boys who were bathed by the girls under Strang's orders. He was bathed, he testified by Viola Bellaire, 15. David was 11 at the time." Miss Jeannette Le Blanc, 19, who entered the Shelter as a resident when she was 14, told that "she only bathed two or three boys all the time she was there. She named a girl, Viola Bellaire as the most industrious assistant in the bathing ritual" "Did the boys take it well?" asked Ira W.Humphries, K.C...." "Some of them didn't like it. Some of them objected by fighting and hitting us" Miss Le Blanc said" There is also a number of less remarkable testimonies described there. The scans of original papers are available at www.newspapers.com, see the Detroit Free Press newspaper, Nov, 1933 - Feb 1934. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
