Subject: 2021 Fairgrounds Sighting Season About To Begin

The summer of 2021 is almost certain to be a better summer for sightings than was 2020. That's the good news. Every single fair and festival that had been a mainstay of my summer for years--and where I score about 90% of my worthwhile sightings every calendar year--was canceled in 2020 because of COVID. I was getting extremely nervous as recently as late April 2021 with no clear signs that social distancing mandates were being lifted but over the course of May I was allowed to breathe a sigh of relief as, one by one, my favorite summer venues announced they were proceeding as planned in 2021. And while I'm still nervous that there's time for things to derail where the Delta variant is sweeping through heavily unvaccinated jurisdictions and could lead to last-minute cancellations (the Missouri State Fair seems the most vulnerable to this!) I'm operating under the assumption that fair season will be business as usual, hearing nothing about any decision for "fairgrounds-wide smoking bans" that I anticipated could happen as a consequence of COVID.

So that's the good news. The bad news is that I go into the 2021 fair season with downwardly adjusted expectations as it's clear that smoking is rapidly approaching its cultural sunset, especially among my preferred demographic of fresh-faced youngsters. The last time I fetished on fairgrounds, it was still legal for 18-20-year-olds to buy cigarettes in all of the Midwestern states I visited....but we're currently 18 months removed from Tobacco 21, the law I submit will be looked back upon as the Hiroshima of smoking in America, not only killing smoking but killing it quickly. With effectively zero replacement smokers in the foreseeable future, my days at fairgrounds seem poised to celebrate the aging cohort of hangers-on who have for whatever reason not given up the habit. The context still provides potential for some incredible storylines, but it also means I'm likely to have many miserable sightings-free hours in the weeks ahead.

But at least there's gonna be a fair season....meaning I'm very likely to find something impactful...something worthy of a year-end list. The usual venues of the Local County Fair in early August, the Iowa State Fair and Missouri State Fair in mid-August, and the Minnesota State Fair in late August and early September, are all on pace to proceed this year. But I'm also adding an additional venue later in July, a rural fair in southern Iowa in an area with a particularly high smoking rate. I'll be going there one or possibly two nights later this month. So I'll be spending a lot of time on fairgrounds between now and Labor Day.

But there's one venue I didn't mention in the paragraph above and that's Summerfest, the local festival that's a two-block walk from my place. It was decided in May that they would be scaling it back from the usual four nights to a one-night celebration with live music and fireworks...but no carnival, parade, or even food vendors from what I can tell. On one hand, this venue has fallen apart for smoker girl sightings in recent years as enforcing no-smoking rules has become the single most important concern of organizers. But I miss the convenience and easy access, as well as the fact that it's the venue where the girls in the upscale-leaning crowd seem to dress the sexiest. But anyway, tonight's the night of "single-evening Summerfest festivities"....and it's forecasted to be endless hours of nonstop rain with highs not even reaching 70, meaning there might not even be any festivities tonight. As low as my expectations were a week ago, they're virtually nonexistent tonight.

Normally at this time I'd offer up links to the previous year's haul of best fairgrounds sightings, but of course I can't do that this year having had no fair season in 2020. Instead, I'll celebrate the venue that Summerfest was in its heyday, linking you to my greatest hits of Summerfest sightings dating back to 2007 when I was new to this community. And there's a twist to these links in that, through a dating site and eventually Facebook, I successfully put a name to the face of a gorgeous heavy-smoking blond who is prominent in three of the Summerfest sightings I've scored over the years, and I've revised my writeups accordingly. So among other things, keep your eyes open for the name "Wendy" as it pops up in these Summerfest greatest hits.
