I'm the same. Even for a night out with the guys, not a second passes that my radar isn't up for attractive women. Most of my male friends tend to be permanently tuned into the female culture as well so I'm not directly familiar with the dynamic you witnessed with the bros at the casino bar.

As for being a girl watcher, your approach would probably be culturally acceptable enough without the context of multiple hours of travel to see a certain demographic of women. For better of worse, I have drifted into the "creepy" profile, particularly as it applies to women smokers. I've been casually busted doing this in practice and more directly called out for it by virtue-signalling online readers (including in the smoking fetish community) decrying my tactics. I have no doubt I'll one day run out of luck with my stepped-up efforts to capture my sightings on camera but it's a risk I'm willing to take. And honestly, I'm too addicted to the adrenaline rush of it to stop anyway.....at least until the nonexistent pipeline of replacement smokers forces me to stop.
