I actually don’t remember the worst spanking I ever got, which I think is pretty weird. I don’t know what it was for and I have no memory of the spanking itself. What I do remember is the bruises the next day! It’s possible I was traumatized and my brain blocked it out.

I think it’s safe to say that most people will overestimate how long and/or hard their spankings were. This problem is compounded by the fact that a lot of parents downplay or outright deny they ever used corporal punishment. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Perception of time is weird, and there's a couple of things likely going on. Obviously a spanking hurts and is a bad experience. The brain tends to slow down time perception during those events. There's also the issue with time perception getting faster as you get older. A minute when you were 14 felt longer than a minute when you're 30.

Pair all that together and I can fully understand how many of us feel like we were getting spanked for five or ten minutes and it was only two. The prep was longer than the spanking.
