Subject: Re: I need basic help with OS 7.5.5 in a Mystic (LC 575)
In reply to: Stuart Bell 's message, "Re: I need basic help with OS 7.5.5 in a Mystic (LC 575)" on 00:13:42 12/15/01 Sat

"My recommendation would be to get a download of 7.5.3 from the Apple site..."

That's how I got 7.5.3! It works fine (although at first it didn't until I added the modified System Enabler 065 ver 1.1).

"Enablers are quite irrelevant to 7.5.5"

I hear you, but see above. The odd thing is that the Apple site's upgrade from the successful 7.5.3 to 7.5.5 does not work! I tried both as a clean installation to my external HD with the finders for all the other OSs "hidden" in their storage folders (I have folders to store them when I install fresh OSs, "7.5.0 Storage" is an example of a folder name.), and as an upgrade to 7.5.3 - I made a working copy of 7.5.3, saw to it that the System Folder was "blessed" by opening it until it showed the face on the folder, and let the 7.5.5 upgrade find it and upgrade it by not hiding it's Finder! - That's why I went ahead and purchased the Power Mac CD.

"the pickle's mod is the VGA mod, not the earlier hi-resolution one"

Sorry, I'm always confused as to that, but it's a FANTASTIC thing, whatever I call it. I an very grateful to Chr...er... the pickle!

"If that fails, then you do have hardware problems"

See above. 7.5.3 works, 7.5.5 fails. ?! This is why I am confused. Can't wait to see what happens when I try OS 8.1!

BTW: I am installing all these OSs with the eventual goal of keeping only OS 7.1.2 (have not been able to find 7.1.1 - is 7.1.2 as good? - , 7.5.5, and 8.1. These 3 I've read everywhere are the best versions. 7.1.2 is fast. 7.5.5 allows me to run my ISP's software (at a minimum), and OS 8.1 is the top range I know I can hope for without Power CC work on my machine. Going beyond that is a goal after I teach myself by handling the unmodified Mystic. Which, as you see, clearly demonstrates your statement: "is, IMHO, masochistic".

Thanks for the reply and the great forum.
