You say that you've had an Ethernet hub connected to the DSL modem, with your two computers connected to the hub and set to DHCP. Could they both surf? If so, you could pull the same trick for the Color Classic.

Get the hub plugged back in between the computers and the DSL modem. After you install OS 8.1 on your CC, open the TCP/IP control panel. Select "Ethernet" from the "connect via" popup, then "DHCP Server" from the popup below that. Enter your domain (e.g. swbell.net, attbroadband.com, qwestnet.com, etc.) in the "Domains" field, and leave the DHCP Client address field blank. Close the control panel and save the changes. Open your Web browser and off you go.
