"At best, a cable or DSL connection will be about 1.5Mbps, well below the speed of 10BaseT Ethernet." The system I service sees speeds up to 5 MegaBits. (Smokin') But, as an AT&T employee who services and installs AT&T Cable Modem Service, I have to say that the LC 575 will NOT route at 1.5 Mbits. There is no way. My G3 300 will pull 4 MegaBits while my LC575, Perf630, 7100/66, 8500/200, and my SE/30 will NEVER pull over 400kbits. (this is running them one at a time on my modem. No bandwidth sharing.) You can talk about bus speeds and ethernet card speeds all you want but what everyone forgets is hard drive speed and memory latency. I have tried this. Obviously the Perf 62/6300 machines are the worst. (They are really choked as everyone already knows.) The 8500 is okay... But, there is too much overhead between the first ethernet device, the memory and hard drive, and the second ethernet device. For web browsing purposes, the video ram and processing power also plays a big role in how fast a page will render and download. Even with mucho RAM and a RAM disk, you will not see any huge gains on the slower Macs on cable. That is why I would never recommend it. For as much $ as you will put in a Mystic to do this, (the extra ethernet card and a license for IPnetRouter), you can buy a 4 port Linksys cable modem router and have a fast network with 1 ip address and firewall protection to boot. (You can find Linksys 4 port routers on eBay for under $100.) If you do choose to do it on dialup, it will work just fine, but if you choose cable or DSL, you will limit the bandwidth to the computer that is attached to the LC575 just because of the overhead and latency times. I'm not trying to bash you here Chris, its just that I sensed a high level of sarchasm and wanted to set things straight. I think what you have contributed to the PCC world has been fantastic. Respectfully,
Scott
