IMHO the 'bang it or flex it affects operation' syndrome is typical of a bad solder joint _somewhere_.

IMHO, don't fiddle with the VGA mod any more -as long as those solder joints are OK. ;-)

Just check the whole a/b and the end-of-CRT PCB for cold dull joints, and remake carefully wherever something looks iffy.
