Suggestions I don't have, as I am in the same boat as you. I decided against wiring up an LCD directly to the 6-bit digital signals largely because different makes of LCD have totally different pinouts, are extremely fragile electrically speaking, and online documentation is nigh impossible to come by. And I also wanted the ability to use the 6500's analog internal video with the LCD.

My solution was to get on eBay (most of my solutions involve ebay) and buy a cheap 10" lcd monitor for $200. Within this screen I found the analog controller I was seeking, as well as a 12v invertor for the LCD lamps. The controller is analog VGA as I wanted the option of hooking it up to internal video. The loss in quality of analog VGA is marginal due to the low resolutions. If this LCD were running at 1024x768 I might consider DVI, but at 640x480 it's not an issue.

Finding my LCD panel has proven more costly. I had to buy an older subnotebook with an 8.4" svga display for more than I'd like to mention. I hope your solution turns out less expensive.
