I tried the 800x600 mode - with SwitchRes and within LinuxPPC (this does not have any limitations - so all resolution types can be tested). Here are some results:

1) 800x600, 50 Hz
Bright enough although the average brightness is lower than in 640x480 mode. Impossible to adjust - the screen have permanent distortion in the upper part (the whole menu bar).

2) 800x600, 60 Hz
Quite dark even on maximum brightness. Also impossible to adjust - the screen have permanent distortion in the upper part (the whole menu bar).

None other screen modes above this last one are working.

I agree the screen is quite small for that resolution. But in a thread about LCD there's information about LCD from Panasonic laptop supporting 800x600 on a 8.4" screen (http://www.voy.com/24978/121.html). This may be a good solution.
