Subject: Will my Colour Classic die?

Today I opened up my Colour Classic to look it over as a prelude to doing the 648x480 mod as part of the process of sticking my newly aquired 575 logic board into it.

However, on the analogue board, in front of the metal box which holds the adjustment controls, and to the right of a large electrolytic cap is a component; RP15. It looks like a large resistor, but I can't tell for sure as Apple helpfully dumped a pile of goop over it. What I can see however, is that it's burned. The glue over it has been scorched, the area of the board surrounding it and it's neighbouring component DP6 has been discoloured, and the inside top of the case (i.e. The underside of the handle cavity) is covered in a greasy black powder I take to be soot.

The machine still works. The only problem I have with it is that the bottom edge of the screen is slightly 'kinked' in that it slants slightly downwards as it goes from left to right until about an inch from the right-hand edge where upon it bends to a horizontally straight line. Start up isn't quite smooth, the screen flickers momentarily before firing up, but I assume(d) that this is normal.

So my questions are:

1) What is DP15?

2) Do you think that DP15 is actually burned? I thought that it just may be that DP15 runs very hot normally, and this merely burned the glue which has been put on top of it. Like I said, the CC still _appears_ to work fine.

3) Has anyone seen anything like this before?

4) What about replacing DP15? I was thinking of replacing it with a component like it, but rated for a higher wattage/volatge/whatever....

5) What worries me especially is that the 640x480 screen mod. places extra strain on the components, especially as the board seems to put off quite a bit of heat already. Anyone got any idea on how advisable the mod would be in light of this?

Hoping that someone can help....

Adam.
