That's really interesting! It reminds me of a scene in P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang. 14 year old Alan Duckworth gets caned by the headmaster, then goes to lunch. He sits down without thinking, and stands up suddenly, wincing. Then sits down again really slowly, with a slight grimace. (the caning scene, but not this aftermath scene, is probably still on YouTube, in appalling quality, with sign language overlay) Like the rest of the movie, it's played out for humour. While Alan is in the process of doing this sitting-standing-sitting thing, his crush, a girl called Ann, is a couple of dozen yards away in the lunch hall. So Alan has to convert his grimace of pain into a pleasant smile at her. All of his classmates know that Alan was caned because they saw him being summoned from PE class to see the headmaster. His friends give brief grunts of sympathy in response to the limited details he provides about the caning. The plot summary on Wikipedia says that Alan is "socially awkward". The good news is that.... [plot spoiler after the pics] (it's set in 1948 - extra points for completely ridiculous grammar school uniforms, this is not even a private school)   .... he *does* eventually get to kiss the girl! I don't really remember the details of the movie, but I think in the first of the two pics above. Alan has been humiliated when approaching Ann to ask to talk to her. Because she has been offered a ride in a motorcycle sidecar, by an older boy who also attends their school. The older boy is old enough to ride a motorcycle (like Kim!) and also old enough to be allowed to wear long trousers (unlike Alan). So Alan has to trudge away dejectedly.
