 Mum and dad were of the opinion if either me or my twin brother Josh were naughty and a smacked bottom was required they would do it in front of whoever witnessed our misbehaviour. My Uncle Chris was also the same with his sons Charlie and Carl. My most embarrassing one was when I was 9 when I was behaving like a brat one Saturday evening at my grandparents. My dad had warned both Josh and me that he was thinking of introducing what he called “big boy smacks” because even though we both cried after he smacked us he was beginning to think smacking was getting less effective. He previously smacked us with his hand over our trousers or shorts. It was usually enough to make us cry. He said a “big boy smack” would be either over our underpants or on our bare bums. On this evening I was behaving like a brat while playing in the garden with Josh, my cousins with my dad and Uncle Chris supervising us. Dad warned me several times that he would smack my bum hard if I continued to act myself. In front of my gran and grandad he would refer to my bum as bottom because they didn’t like the word bum or arse as he usually used. So after several warnings he eventually decided that I needed to be punished for my bratty behaviour and grabbed hold of me to my horror he pulled my pants down and smacked me several times hard over my underpants making me cry my eyes out. I remember being down on my knees with my pants around my ankles sobbing and crying and my grandparents coming out and my gran asking what happened. My dad said “Jack has just had his bottom smacked hard over his underpants. He has been acting himself all evening, he got what he deserved.”
