To David's father:

Dear Sir:

I have just learned that you plan to administer maintenance spankings to your children. I can't see how maintenance spankings can possibly improve their behavior. If you are going to get spanked whether or not you sneak a cookie out of the jar, why not enjoy the cookie? Please reconsider. If the spankings you have been administering are not correcting your kids' behavior, will more of the same work?

if you need to do more to correct behavior, then up the ante on the earned punishments: More swats, harsher implement, additional punishments, but not spankings just to be spanking.

Also, be sure to reward them for good behavior, even if that behavior is just obeying the rules without anything more. Maybe let them forgo a chore or two. The lawn can maybe go an extra week unmowed, or perhaps take away the chore from the kid to whom it's assigned who is behaving and giving it to one who isn't for this week?

In any case, I hope you will reconsider maintenance spankings. Thank you.

Respectfully, Jerry (age 17).
