Do you have a >backup heat supply like a wood burning fireplace? > Most of our power outages are caused by tree limbs knocking down power lines. Fortunately, most of the electric lines around here are underground. We have a generator we can pull out of the garage and fire up to run the furnace and enough lights to get by. It isn't enough to run the AC but we get by ok with lights and electronics to keep entertained. Some people have big, built in, automatic generators that run on natural gas but they are expensive.
