 Hello sir, I'm not a parent but in my opinion your stepson's friend probably found it very interesting and maybe exciting to watch!

I guess probably your stepson didn't like it being done this way. Did he protest or say anything else when you told him the paddling was happening right there? Did he cry during or after the swats?

I know it's not quite the same thing, but birchings and canings in UK schools last century quite often happened in front of the class or even in front of the entire school. And some of these were bare bottom. This even still happens in some countries. I think in a few private schools in USA younger kids can still get paddled in front of the class.

There's a scene in movie Joe The King where a boy in elementary school gets a bare bottom spanking in front of the class.

And for spankings from parents it's not totally unusual for kids to get spanked with other ppl watching.
