I used to get a lot of massive chocolate Easter Eggs. But I don't get quite as many now for some reason. As you probably know, Roald Dahl got the original idea for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" because when he was at Repton boarding school, Cadbury used to send free samples of their chocolates to the boys at the school for taste testing. And this is how Roald Dahl got obsessed with chocolate and with big chocolate companies. (He was already obsessed with other sorts of candy, and supposedly got caned at a previous school for playing a prank on a sweet shop owner.) At the time, the two biggest chocolate companies in the UK were Cadbury and Rowntree. And apparently they both actually sent spies into each other's chocolate factories to steal each other's recipes. Which inspired the slightly crazy situations in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I think the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book didn't have any actual spankings in it. But it did have at least one mention of spankings: it's mentioned that one of the kids "needs a really good spanking". In 2023 the publishers changed this to "needs a really good talking to" as part of editing changes for "accessibility and inclusivity". These changes caused a lot of controversy. I think Grant got a spanking over a Cadbury's chocolate bar least week! As well as Repton School being where Roald Dahl got sent free Cadbury chocolates, it's also where he got a lot of the huge canings that later inspired Galloping Foxley and some other stories that have big spankings in. This is from Repton School's official archives showing the caning procedure: ![]() These pics are from the TV adaptation of Galloping Foxley: ![]() [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
