We can't say *for certain* that no part of the spanking in that short movie was done for real. We do know that the punishments in Kes, Ilo Ilo, and the original Lord of the Flies movie were all done for real. I think the actor (blue T-shirt kid) not yelping is intentional. This spanking is a stinging one. Bad enuff to leave him sore temporarily. But it's not a super severe one. Belt spankings and cane spankings have relatively limited numbers of whacks, so they need force behind the whacks in order to achieve a really severe butt blistering. So belt spankings over the knee probably aren't often very severe. Even if it isn't the case for you and me, I think it is possible for a spanking to be effective even without it resulting in any yelps from the boy receiving it. I think one or two people who post here have mentioned receiving a big spanking without yelping or crying. The caning in P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang (not a severe caning) produces no yelps from the recipient. And I think there are several other portrayals (also based on real life) that are similar. I have to agree that it's got to be difficult telling the difference in sound between a belting over undies and a belting on a bare bottom. Depending on the underwear worn, most of the area hit by the belt will still be bare skin anyway:  Especially if the spanker is applying a partial wedgie to tighten the underwear:  It's interesting to speculate about what the movie producers wanted us to imagine and what they chose to show. I think them showing the jeans coming down is intended to emphasise the vulnerability of the boy and also show that he's submitting to his punishment. They don't seem to want to emphasise embarrassment - which would be the effect if he has to take down his undies while his sister is watching the whole thing. The focus is on how sore his bottom is going to be, not embarrassment. (As shown by his sister gloating specifically about how much pain he's going to be in.) I do think there's a slight hole in credibility that the kid submits to his spanking with so little protest. When he knows he's innocent and even after his sister has spent so much time teasing him about it and gloating. Altho, maybe this is something that happens a lot and it has happened in the past that he's protested his innocence and got extra spanks for it. So he knows he just has to accept it. There does seem to be some bias in the family. Firstly in the way that his parents automatically believe his sister and don't let him give his side of the story. Second that they let his sister watch the spanking (bare bottom or not) with a close up view even tho she's obviously gloating about it. That must be fairly unusual even for parents that spank. I think you're right that the movie producers succeeded in getting us to identify with the boy and also project our own thoughts and imaginations onto what is happening. I've always thought of the belting as being bare bottom even though it turns out you're right only the jeans are shown coming down. I also prefer the first half of this short movie not the ending. To me it's most amusing for him to get this spanking knowing that it's all because of his sister wanting to see him get the belt. So I think it would've been funnier if the parents hadn't found out the truth. The idea that he just has to submit to it is kind of intense. Plus if his sister gets away with it, it will only encourage her to get him spanked again in similar ways in the future. I think girls that age often want a phone upgrade almost once a year. I wonder how many times she could do this on a yearly basis until the parents get suspicious? Also the beltings will need to be bigger each time, if there are repeat offenses of him allegedly destroying phones.
