Western U.S. Region Irish Dance
Welcome to the U.S. Western Region Irish Dance Message Board!

  • Forget late awards and embarrassing fangirling over Magic Mike. Can we talk about moving the Cleary Feis to Hawaii? Who can afford this? This is tone deaf.. you’re shutting out families who don’t have the funds for this absurdity. -- No name, 09:35:16 09/30/24 Mon [32]

Irish dance students, like those in many competitive dance forms, can be vulnerable to abuse due to the intense pressure to perform, the hierarchical structure of dance schools, and close relationships with instructors. The six-month bans imposed on our dancers highlight the need for stronger safeguards in the industry. To be more proactive, dance schools should implement clear policies on ethical behavior, provide regular training on recognizing and reporting abuse, and foster open communication between students, parents, and instructors. Encouraging a healthy, supportive environment where dancers feel safe to speak out is essential for their well-being. My daughter will have to sit out of Oirechtas this year because of a dance school change. No child should have to pay the price for leaving a bad situation. No parent should feel like they can't advocate for their child!

If you were able to get a room booked in the block at the Arizona Grand, have you been charged a deposit yet? With everything that happened last year, I don't feel like my room is secure until the deposit is charged. Or are they not charging a deposit this year?

  • For the newbie parents absolutely losing their minds over the Room Block requirement. -- An Open Mum, 14:34:22 09/07/24 Sat [40]
The only reason we’re in Phoenix again this year is because the pacific nw who was supposed to host couldn’t find a venue that wasn’t booked out already. Venues are increasingly booked and becoming even more unaffordable with terms not beneficial to our org. You all know costs everywhere have been going up.

The grand is good because the region doesn’t have to quadruple our entry fees to cover the venue. The bargaining power that gives us stages and ballrooms for cheaper or free is the room block- because we support the hotel, they give us the venue for a price we as a region can afford.

Now, with the grand, it makes sense that we would want to stay at the venue.
In other years, it will be at convention centers or even hotel ballrooms where there are other hotels around.

What happens if the room block is not filled?

The Hotel goes to the contract agreement, which then makes us as a region pay the $200,000 or likely more for the hotel ballrooms, stages, extra rooms for costumes/practice rooms, required catering, etc.

Regions financial security and solvency has been destroyed in years past when a room block does not fill. We’re not talking kickbacks and drinking nights for the board… we’re talking the ability to host Oireachtas at all.

Think about it. At a regular ballet/contemporary etc competition dancers are paying $100-$120 per solo and $60 each per team dance plus a $50-100 registration fe. We aren’t doing too bad in Irish keeping costs down. It’s not price gouging on the region’s part.

Do we need to worry about not fulfilling our contractual obligations this year? No, the grand will fill no problem. But in coming years we have to face the fact that we all have a responsibility to support the competition by staying in the room block. This and last year were practice years before it becomes absolutely necessary. And the room block comes with the benefit of a discounted rate over the regular rate.

I know you’re new to this, but I hope this helps you understand what is happening. It’s not a money grab by the region. It has to happen to give us bargaining power to actually pull and event of this size off every year.

Reminder that you only need to stay in the block on the night before your dancer dances to get the necessary wristbands. If you really can’t afford it, stay somewhere else on the other nights of your trip. A Feistv subscription is cheaper than buying tickets to go in and watch, and would relieve crowding.

The Grand will be hiring door monitors, so please play fairly.

Thanks and best wishes for your school’s and dancers preparations for the Oireachtas!

Marriot folks now have to pay for extra transportation, get smaller rooms and if you rent a car, now have to pay a daily parking fee. So way more $$$$ than the Grand.

  • Official Statement East Bay Feis -- EBF, 11:24:47 08/28/24 Wed [1]
    Dear Teachers, Parents and Dancers,

Earlier in 2024,it became apparent for reasons that do not include anything related to Irish Dance, our dance school or Feis, we may need to prioritize our family and a loved one in late summer/early fall. We communicated with local Teachers who know us well and the reason will not be disclosed publicly. It has nothing to do with the teachers, school or Feis and is a private matter.

Another school asked if they could host an event in during our one year hiatus, and we said “absolutely. We will show up as a school on the weekend in any and every way possible”. For reasons beyond our and the other schools control, we learned last week that it was not possible for this to happen. The reason no official communication was sent prior to now is that all involved thought there was a solution.

After last weekends Feis, other long standing schools in the Bay Area offered to see if we could continue with a Feis or not. At this point, it’s only fair to all involved to let you know we are not running a 2024 Feis.

We hope you understand and thank so many people in the community that have demonstrated such understanding and grace.

Best of luck to all of the schools and dancers as they prepare for and compete in the WRO.

    Eileen and Annie
