To echo the earlier replies: Yes, I believe this was very appropriate. IMO, it was especially so because the boy’s mother was involved in his discipline, under the guidance and direction of the church elders.
While I have only recently been named as an elder in our congregation, I have been called on to assist in two similar situations: one with the very young father of a five-year-old boy, and one with the stepdad of a preteen boy, the gentleman being new to the role of parent and new to the role of disciplinarian. In both cases I held the boy as his dad administered the correction, and I provided instruction and encouragement.
