My father, in particular, would send me upstairs to brush my teeth and put on my pajamas and wait for him to come up and spank me. He would also tell me to think about what I had done to deserve the spanking.

I really didn’t think about much of anything except the fact that I was going to get my butt beat. I surely regretted that I was in for a licking, but I don’t think that I engaged in much deep reflection on mending my ways.

When the licking was over and I was bawling and hopping around the room trying to rub the fire out of my butt cheeks, I definitely was not reflecting on how I could change for the better. I was focused on the pain and not much else.

I don’t think spanking taught me right from wrong. In fact, in most cases, I already knew right from wrong before I got spanked and usually, when I did whatever it was I did to get spanked, I knew it was wrong and that if I got caught, I would get spanked and I did it anyway.

I think spanking was a definite deterrent to some bad behavior, especially in the near term. That is, when spanked, I was considerably more careful about my behavior for a period of time after the spanking. Eventually though, the memory would fade a bit and I would be tempted by something or other and engage in some exciting behavior that risked a spanking. I’ve posted in other threads that I was a risk taker as a boy and loved the excitement of almost getting caught.

Of course, when you risk such behaviors, sometimes you do get caught and in the era that I grew up in, you usually got spanked. I guess I would belong to the school of thought that argues that kids don’t learn to behave from being spanked, rather, they learn to avoid getting caught.
