Like you, I sensed my parents took no pleasure in spanking me. It was simply something that needed to be done when I misbehaved. But your comments about teachers brings to mind one particular teacher who I feel did enjoy bullying kids and took it too far. He had a huge paddle made of plywood in the shape of a giant hand with holes bored in it and would paddle for little or no reason and much too hard. On occasions when he was called to witness a paddling, he would actually offer to do the paddling, and would walk around the class with a heavy yardstick in his hand and swat students on the butt or legs for literally no reason. He was eventually and thankfully fired because he took things too far. Even though I had him for a teacher, I was fortunate that I wasn't one of the students he paddled.
Even though I did get spanked in school and deserved it each time, it's because of this particular teacher that I oppose Corporal Punishment in schools.
