I was spanked until I turned 13, that would have been 1984, and I was in middle school. At the time there were kids my age besides me who openly talked about being spanked. Occasionally other boys taking showers after PE class had spanking marks (which would be pointed out and lead to them being mercilessly teased). I had younger cousins and aunts, uncles, and other family members who would openly talk about spankings in their homes well into the early 1990s.

I didn't start developing an interest in spanking until I was about 23 or 24. At the time I was dating a girl a few years younger than me who started an on-again, off-again discussion of spanking. Like me she was spanked growing up to about age 13 (so about 1987), and we had some fascinating discussions on the topic. After that I developed a radar about spanking being mentioned by other parents/adults. While it hasn't happened much, I've overheard enough confident use of the word that (while it may not be quite as common as 40+ years ago), for many parents, using spanking, even the "good old fashioned" variety is alive and well. It's definitely much more rarely/carefully discussed in the open.
