I grew up in the mid-1970s and at least where I was growing up spanking was quite common back then. My best guesstimate based on all the mentions from other kids such as friends, neighbors, cousins, at school or summer camp and sometimes adults too is that when I was middle-school age, of all the boys I knew perhaps about a half were spanked several times a year, and by spanking I mean a formal bare-bottom spanking with belt or similar, a small minority maybe 10% were spanked more often than that, another minority perhaps 10-20% never spanked at all or so they said, and the remaining kids were spanked just occasionally. This is my best gauging for boys, I do not know about girls since spankings were not the subject a boy would discuss with a girl or vice versa. Also, sometimes at a family gathering a grown up could mention about some boy (a cousin or other relation) that he got a spanking, but I do not remember ever hearing this being said about a girl.

I did not have older friends so cannot tell how it was earlier, such as 10 year before my time.

My best meter about how things stood 10 year later in the mid-1980s is from extended family and a few mentions by friends who had younger sibs, and the best I can gather is that spankings still happened but appeared to become quite less common than when I was a kid.

So my guess is that there was some appreciable drop-off somewhere in the early 80s, at least in my neighborhood, or so it seems.
