My school did use corporal punishment. The school was divided into the Lower School (grades 1-7) and the Upper School (grades 8-12).

At the Lower School, the paddles were smaller but as far as I can tell there was not much in the way of regulation. Your teacher would just send you out into the hallway and you would get paddled there, where anyone who happened to be passing by could see. A paddling had to have a witness, and sometimes we would be sitting in class and the teacher next door would pop her head in to ask if my teacher could serve as a witness. The Lower School did not have a concept of detention so a paddling was not up to the student. I learned years later that my parents did sign a waiver but there was no opt-out option.

At the Upper School the rules changed. Only administrators could paddle, although this rule was not always followed, and it had to be a same-sex administrator. You had the option of a detention or a paddling, but some offenses were mandatory corporal punishment-smoking and fighting come to mind.

I chose the paddling. At that age, I was no longer spanked at home so it was better just to get it over with. If I was still spanked at home, I would have chosen the detention so I wouldn’t be spanked twice. I only had to make the choice once, as the second time I was paddled at the Upper School it was for a mandatory offense.
