My school in the 1950s was unusual: no spankings allowed. This was a wealthy suburb, mostly Republican, I don't know why they had that policy. I knew spankings were allowed in almost all other schools. We were punished by staying after school to write lines, mostly.
...In third grade, I remember there was a boy who was always disrupting the class, and in my self-righteous way I wished the teacher could just give him a spanking so we could get on with our work. Thinking back, he probably had ADHD.
