Ah yes, Senior skip day!

Officially speaking it wasn't sanctioned at my school either. And there were boys who got in trouble for it every year. Typically, that was the result of some other activities involved with cutting classes.

Besides, a lot of senior misbehavior was overlooked. It was considered a privilege of having lived on campus for seven years at that point.

Some friends and I, we went to see a movie, and to play music at a local club, where the owner knew us. This was significant because cutting classes might be overlooked, but leaving campus without an exeat... not so much.

But getting an exeat for the day was full of problems in it's own right. First of all, if your request was turned down, then you've essentially told the school what your plans are. And then there's the pesky detail of if they approve your exeat, then are you truly skipping?

That may sound weird but that was a detail that some of us actually cared about.

Now things worked a little differently in the senior building (we called it "the old school") than other stories about the school that I've told you in this forum. To begin with, we had our own rooms. But more importantly, we had our own exit.

But access to the students parking... not so much!

We'd arranged a ride for the day, all we had to do was walk 100 yards up the sidewalk by the outer wall separating the sports field from the road.

Of course, there is the added benefit to doing it that way, our cars are still in students parking, so security assumed that we are on campus.

One boy in our group, he had a teacher who was particularly out to get him in trouble for his little adventure with us. So about mid day, he came up with an excuse to raise suspicions that that boy was off campus.

Disciplinary actions for seniors, they were decided by the Principal himself. That's another part of the reason why we got away with a lot of what we did. Principal just didn't really have time for all of that.

For whatever reason, no one seemed to realize that I was with the group that day. I never found out how they got a partial list of boys that were in our group specifically. We weren't the only ones who left campus that day.

Whatever was going on there, I never ended up getting called to the principal. My Half-Brother, (only six months difference from me, and same grade) he was on the list.

He admitted that he left campus that day, but denied that he left with the group, and told Stone that he'd gone to the cemetery, instead.

(Brother's best friend died a few years before this. What's worse is that his best friend pretty much died in front of him. Brother had gone home with his friend that weekend, they were playing basketball and his friend collapsed right there in the middle of the game. By the time the boy got to the hospital he had passed.)

Stone simply told brother to go back to his room, and stay there the rest of the day. That was Stone's way of saying that Brother was to be overlooked.

One obvious detail that it appears that Stone missed, was the fact that his friend was actually buried across the border in Connecticut. Stone was at the funeral, and should have known that. Without access to his car, there was no way Brother could have gone to visit his friend for Senior Skip day.

Then the story gets even far less charming when you find out that brother didn't actually go to the, music club with us after the movie. He went home with the economics teacher's daughter who was participating in Senior Skip day from the Girl's school.

I think I can leave it to your own imagination what they did when they got back to her place, which was only about 10 minutes from our school. That's a half hour walk, and she had the keys to her father's apartment.

(teachers had apartments, at the edge of campus. The front facing to the main road and theg back door, right to the scool itself.)

Once inside the walls, she just had to make her way across the pond to the girl's school, and Brother just had to avoid being seen until... probably any point in the over walk, or perhaps even just in the East garden would work.

The original boy, who a different teacher was trying to get busted. I actually didn't hear at the end of that story. Or rather I heard conflicting rumors. (Which was typical in our school)

Either he did get the horse stick, which would have been by the Principal himself, and would have been done in private. Or the teacher was so embarrassed by acting on a petty conflict with a student, that he took the last month of the year off.

It is true that I didn't see that teacher again until graduation.
