The system where I went to School, Corporal Punishment was pretty much the go to choice although Detention was used frequently as well. It seemed most students if given the choice of licks or detention, would go ahead and take the licks rather than having to spend two hours after school. That's what I did when I got that severe paddling from the Assistant Principal. At the beginning of the school year, we had to bring a packet home for our parents to read and sign. There were the usual forms about lunches, busses, Lab fees, etc... Also, there was a booklet that was titled "Code of Conduct". It was a summary of the rules and regulations and penalties the school could use if those rules were broken which included Corporal Punishment. There was a brief overview of how the punishment would be administered, who would be witnessing, and so forth. Then at the end there was a permission slip the parents had to sign. It said, "I have read and understood the Code of Conduct and I. then it gave you two choices. "Choose to allow my child to receive Corporal Punishment at School" or "Choose to not allow my child to receive Corporal Punishment at School." At the bottom of the slip it had an additional note saying, "If this slip is not returned, it is assumed you have chosen to allow your child to receive Corporal Punishment at School." Every year, my parents checked to allow us to be spanked at school. But after that last paddling I got, Momma and Daddy decided they would no longer allow us to be paddled at school. There was only one time where Momma warned me she would allow me to be paddled after that time. That was in my Senior year. Our School had an unofficial tradition called Senior Skip Day. The seniors would skip school on that day. However it was not sanctioned and students that participated in it got paddled when they came back to school. Any students who weren't allowed to be paddled got a week of detention and suspension from participating in all extracurricular activities for two weeks. It was also counted as an unexcused absence, so any work or tests you missed on Skip Day, you would not be allowed to make up. A couple of my friends tried to convince me to skip. So I discussed it with Momma and she told me, "You're seventeen, it's your choice. You know the school isn't allowed to paddle you for skipping, but If you do decide to skip, I will send the Principal a note to allow you to get paddled for this occasion and I'll blister your butt with the hairbrush when you come back home. Have I made myself clear?" I said, "Yes Momma" and decided pass on Skip Day. Fifty-Seven students participated that year which was on a Friday and on the following Monday, During Homeroom, The Principal read out the names of all the students who skipped and told them to report to the Auditorium immediately. That list included the two girls who tried to talk me into skipping. Each student got a very stern lecture from the Principal and Assistant Principal, then they were told to form two lines and when they each had to come to the front of the stage to get three licks each. I saw the two girls after the end of first period and it was obvious they had been crying. They told me they wished they hadn't skipped.

When I got married, my Husband and I bought a house just a couple of blocks from where I grew up. So my kids go to the same schools I went to when I was a kid. However, they banned Corporal Punishment long before my oldest, who is thirteen now, started school. If they still allowed it, I most likely would not allow them to paddle my kids. Mostly because of the risk that some Teachers or Administrators might go overboard with it.
