Growing up in the South, I got to hear the phrase "Come to Jesus Meeting" a LOT. I also knew that it wasn't just applied to spankings. In fact, I used that phrase myself with kids I got into fights with. When they'd get me mad enough to throw punches, I'd tell them "Sweetie, me and you are about to have a come to Jesus meeting." My folks never used that expression when they were going to spank us. But I have heard other parents threaten their kids with it. The last time I heard my Momma use that term was when she decided to have words with my Assistant Principal after he paddled me in Seventh Grade. She told me she was going to have a come to Jesus meeting with the Assistant Principal and Principal. She ripped them and the Secretary a new one. So for me that phrase was less about a kid getting ready to get spanked and more about a fight was about to happen.
