It is astonishing how common and openly accepted spanking children was just a half century ago. I am also astonished at all of your obedience with not only going over her knee but taking your own clothes down in public, after causing a ruckus in the store but I guess you all knew she meant business. I have much more to say about this but let me just get the questions off my chest. Forgive me some of them are very specific. They are from me reading different versions on other forums in the past. I just want to see if these things are true to what happened or perhaps embellished.

1) Is it true she spanked all 5 of you with just her open hand?

2) When you were waiting in the stairwell, did any of you acknowledge what was about to happen? Or was it just waiting in silent dread?

3) When your mother arrived to bring you to the shoe department, is it true she just pointed in the direction and said "march." Just the one word? Or was she more actively scolding at the time?

4) How long roughly did each spanking last? Was there an estimated number of smacks you recall each kid received? Did the two bigger kids get longer and harder spankings while the little ones were over more quickly?

5) Did all the kids including yourself quickly pull their clothes back up the moment your mother released them?

6) It's funny how you said Carmen cried the most but how did the older boys take their spankings? Was either able to be remotely stoic about it or were both openly crying by the end?

7) This one is a bit personal and I realize it all happened decades ago so it might not be clear in the memory, but were the older kids blushing? Were they focused more on the spankings that were happening or the crowd that was slowly but surely starting to form to watch their imminent bare bottom spankings?

8) Just one other question not related to the event: was your younger sister shorter than average and that's why she kept going over your mom's knee into her teens?

I just want to say that I think it's a fitting that Carmen got a public bare bottom spanking at 13 years old in front of at least two dozen people after you told me she switched you on your bare skin. Not to mention she would purposefully get you in trouble and enjoy watching the resulting spectacle. It truly makes me feel better about the whole thing. That being said, the thing that bothers me about this whole thing is that, while you say she was not too old to be spanked since she got spanked well into her teens, I would venture to agree that she was too old to be given specifically a public bare bottom spanking. I understand times were so different than now, but I even feel bad for your older brother having to submit to this at 11 years old, and even worse I didn't know that he no longer was spanked over the knee at home, so that might have been a major test to his ego.

I am not surprised at all that Carmen cried the most because she must have experienced immense shame, significantly more so than the younger kids except perhaps your older brother who must have looked quite silly being spanked bare bottom by a woman shorter than him. However, I must say that all other judgments aside, this was a very clever punishment mainly for the big kids. They had been warned exactly what would happen for misbehaving in public. In a way, their comeuppance was fitting. Particularly Carmen should have been setting a better example for you all but she didn't and neither did your older brother. As punishment, they not only were spanked bare bottom but had to stand there completely powerless while the little kids took their spankings and watch as the crowd grew to around 30 people gathered to witness their spankings.

It is this specific aspect of the public spanking that has always captured my attention. The oldest children having to wait while the crowd forms. I find it fascinating yet disturbing. It would never come close to happening in the present day.
